Room 304 - SCIENCE on TUESDAYS!

1st grade science

Our 2nd trimester unit is "Sound and Light".  We will open with an investigation of our senses.  We will focus on hearing and seeing with this unit.  First up is light because it flows nicely from our investigations of our sun.  We will discuss light sources, how they help us see, the properties of light and how things interact with light.  Vocabulary words to focus on are: transparent, translucent, opaque, and reflective.

Sound will follow after the holidays.  Students will investigate sounds, how sound is made, what sound is, and make some sounds of their own.  They will need to bring in one toilet paper tube.  Vocabulary words to focus on are: vibration, pitch, volume, and loudness

2nd grade science

2nd grade focuses on processes which change the earth.  We open with an investigation of how water travels (downhill).  We then move into a study of landforms.  Later investigations will show how these landforms are created.  The unit will show students how changes to our earth can be slow (weathering) or quick (volcano, earthquake).  We will look at how rocks and fossils are made too.  In addition, we will try to come up with ways to prevent erosion.  Some vocabulary words to focus are: erosion, volcano, earthquake, crust, mantle, core, plates, weathering, and landforms.
